BirdLife International

April 6, 2018 by TAFlyingMonkeys

We are a flourishing network of seven national organisations supported by a small BirdLife Secretariat in Fiji, and all the local people that we work with along the way. Read more about BirdLife Pacific.

Our Partnership

The Pacific Partnership currently consists of seven national grassroots conservation organisations of which one, Nature-Fiji-MareqetiViti, joined the Partnership in 2013 after intensive capacity-building effort by the Pacific Partnership’s Fiji Programme. The Pacific Partnership cooperates with other BirdLife Partners from countries with territories and dependencies in the Pacific, including the RSPB (UK), National Audubon Society (USA), and LPO (France).

BirdLife Partners – Pacific

The BirdLife Pacific Partnership currently includes seven national grassroots membership organisations representing countries in Polynesia (including New Zealand), Melanesia, Micronesia and Australia. Only 2% of the vast area included in the region is land, and many of the often tiny islands have been ravaged by introduced alien predators and pests, leading to high rates of extinction.

More than a quarter of the world’s threatened bird species belong to the Pacific. The Pacific region is also critically important for seabirds.

The Pacific Partnership has pioneered many of the techniques of invasive alien species eradication and island restoration which are increasingly being adopted around the world, inside and outside the BirdLife Partnership, and is developing a uniquely “Pacific”, community-based approach to conserving island forests, which are home to the majority of the region’s threatened birds, and the basis of traditional, sustainable livelihoods.
